News is what is new; it’s what’s happening. News is described as “a report of recent events or previously unknown information”. News is the communication of selected information on current events which is presented by print, broadcast, Internet or word of mouth to a third party or mass audience. Commonly, news content should contain the "Five Ws" (who, what, when, where, why, and also how) of an event. There should be no questions remaining.

News has two priorities

• It must be current.
• It must mean something to people.

A story about the environment and a story about the Oscars can both be newsworthy for different reasons.

News organizations are often expected to aim for objectivity; reporters claim to try to cover all sides of an issue without bias, as compared to commentators or analysts, who provide opinion or personal point-of-view. Often called a “daybook” this list of activities is not automatically newsworthy but it provides a good basis for reporters to search for any particular news.


One of the most appealing news is called Hard news and appears on the front page of newspapers. Stories that fall under the umbrella of hard news often deal with topics like business, politics and international news. "News" can become just another type of thrilling entertainment.

News organizations see their work as a public service, so news is fabricated of information that people need to know in order to go about their daily lives and to be productive citizens in a democracy.
