Boxes are used for a large number of purposes, but in the industries, they are mostly used for packaging. There are different kinds of boxes for different kinds of packaging. The shapes, sizes and the materials of the boxes depend on what they contain.

Boxes are some of the most useful items used for packing. They are widely used in the packaging industry for packing a big range of products including bottles, furniture, electronics and mechanical equipment, sports gear and even art works, among others. They have many classifications – corrugated box, carton box, wooden box, bulk box etc. They can also be classified on the basis of the kind of purpose they are going to serve e.g. boxes for bottles, postal, mugs, picture frames, stationery etc.

Cardboard box is very common for packaging purposes. There can be four different kinds of cardboard boxes – standard, heavy duty, white and triple wall. The first type is for single wall usage and is made of corrugated Kraft layer. The inner part is recycled flute. They are often packed flat and the flaps need to be taped often. The heavy duty cardboard box is designed to reduce the overall requirement for packaging, thanks to its large space, greater strength due to double layered walls and 7% lighter materials.

White cardboard boxes can be of standard, postal, cake, solid board and recycle bin types. The triple wall cardboard box has a layer of Kraft on the outside and has recycled flute. They also have corrugated layers. Corrugated boxes themselves are very useful as shipping containers. They often have inner components like blocking, cushioning and bracing for fragile contents. Such a box may often contain labels, bar codes printed on it and graphical designs. Stacking strength is a very important parameter for boxes. This signifies the resistance to crushing.

Testing of such boxes like the box compression test is often done. There is another kind of box that is called the bulk box. They are constructed of corrugated fiberboard, which can be double or triple wall. In heavy industries, there may be boxes that are made of steel and aluminum to be able to withstand great forces, weights and impacts. Different kinds of standardizations are slated to be met like for wirebound shipping boxes, wood-cleated panel board ones etc. The words carton, made of paperboard, and box, are often interchangeable. Consumer goods are packed in cartons.

Some other classifications of boxes may be made – mirror, dish packs, legal tote, book, wardrobe and mattress boxes. These boxes carry exactly what the names imply and in particular, legal tote boxes are meant for carrying files and folders. Other boxes include those meant for postal or mailing purposes, mugs and packing electronic goods, which are often fragile.
