Indian Bollywood Cinema: Bollywood is the term popularly
used for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, The term is inspired
by Hollywood basically derived as Bombay+Hollywood = Bollywood.Mumbai ( formerly
Bombay) is Located in Maharashtra, India. The term is often incorrectly used to
refer to the whole of Indian cinema but it is only a part of the total Indian
film industry, which includes other production centers producing films in
regional languages. Bollywood is the largest film producer in India and one of
the largest centers of film production in the world.
History of Bollywood: Bollywood is supposedly Started in
1930s when it produced its first movie by the name of 'Alam Ara' It was directed
by Ardeshir Irani. It was the first Indian sound film Irani recognized the
importance that sound would have on the cinema, and raced to complete Alam Ara
before several contemporary sound films. Alam Ara debuted at the Majestic Cinema
in Mumbai (then Bombay) on March 14, 1931. The first Indian talkie was so
popular that "police aid had to be summoned to control the crowds."
Ardeshir Irani then made the first colour film in Hindi, Kisan Kanya.The next
year, he made another colour film, a version of Mother India. However, colour
did not become a popular feature until the late 1950s. At this time, lavish
romantic musicals and melodramas were the staple fare at the cinema.
Following India's independence, the period from the late 1940s to the 1960s
is regarded by film historians as the "Golden Age" of Hindi cinema.
Bollywood Comedy & Comedians: Indian Hindi Comedy industry
started up with our pioneer comedians Bhagwan Dada and Gope. The first Hindi
comedy movie was directed and produced by Bhagwan dada in 1951. Bollywood
musical comedy film was named as 'Albela'. A Hindi classic, it was the third
highest grossing film at the Indian Box Office in 1951. Later in 1950 with
advent of the greatest Bollywood comedians of all times Johnny Walker Indian
Comedy Industry achieved a milestone. He was introduced to the silver screen by
Guru Dutt. Johnny Walker was born as Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi. Most of the
films of Guru Dutt featured him. His Comic role as Baniya in 1955's Railway
Platform is still remembered. But two of his most memorable films were CID
(1956) and Pyaasa (1957).
The king of comedy in the 1960s was
Mehmood. Mehmood Ali was the comedy czar in Indian film industry.
He started his career as a comedian when comedy was still in a nascent stage in
Bollywood with his own movie Chhote Nawab. Humour came spontaneously to Mehmood.
That was the reason why he went onto become one of the greatest comedians of the
silver screen. His films were rather remembered for his comic timings rather
than the leading men and women.One film for which Mehmood will always be

Rajendranath was also famous for his comic roles. He was a
regular in the films of Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor. His funny gimmicks always
made the audience break into peels of laughter. He was seen in films such as,
Dil Deke Dekho, Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon, Teesri
Manzil, Baharon Ke Sapne, Pyar Ka Mausam, An Evening in Paris and others.
Besides them, actors like Kishore Kumar, Utpal Dutt and Deven Verma have
successfully made the audience laugh with their gimmicks. The latter two were a
regular in the comic flicks of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee. Kishor
Kumar's Comic roles are classic and are still remembered in

Utpal Dutt was primarily a theatre personality and
undoubtedly one of the most versatile actors that the sub continent had
produced. He did many villainous roles with his characteristic comic tinge.
The 1980s saw a number of comic stars on the horizon. One of them was Asrani
and the other was Jagdeep. Asrani's small role in Sholay as the jailor is still
fresh in people`s minds. He has also been felicitated with Filmfare Award for
best comedian for the films Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar (1973) and Balika Badhu (1976)
Shakti Kapoor is one of the most able actors to grace the Bollywood screen as
a villain as well as comedian. He was born on 3rd September 1958. He has done
around 413 films in his whole film career.He had been often nominated for the
Filmfare Award in the most comic performance category. His very notable
performances include Nandu of the David Dhawan masterpiece Raja Babu. Actors
like Kadar Khan and Johnny Lever rocked the silver screen with their ability to
entertain people. Johny Lever is one of the most popular comedians of the Indian
film industry and was born on 14th August 1956 as John Rao in the village of
Amkam in the Prakasam district, in Andhra Pradesh. The journey to stardom is
like a fairy tale to the extremely talented actor Johnny Lever. With his short
stature and dark complexion he went on to create history in the genre of comedy.
His sense of comic timing was inborn.
As a director David Dhawan films were trendsetters. It saw the mainstream
heroes portraying comic characters. One such actor is Govinda. Teaming up with
Dhawan he delivered some of the biggest comic flicks in the 1990s and 2000. Some
of these films have also been termed as slapstick. However the masses loved
them. Films, such as, Dulhe Raja, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Haseena Maan Jayeegi,
Jodi No.1, Partner and others were runaway hits. Such movies also featured Kadar
Khan and Johnny Lever.
Arshad Warshi, another Bollywood actor, is famous for his comic roles. His
character play as "circuit" in Rajkumar Hirani`s Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho
Munnabhai was outstanding. Even in films like Hulchul and Golmal he did a
fantastic role. Boman Irani and Anupam Kher also deserve special mention for
their contribution in the comic genre of Indian cinema. In films like Khosla ka
Ghosla both these actors come together and put up an unforgettable performance.
Rajpal Yadav is an Indian actor who is known for his
unconventional comedy sequences. He hails from the Shahjahanpur district of
Uttar Pradesh. He has an excellent fan base in India.He earned great applaud for
his comic roles in movies like Hungama, Waqt: The Race against Time, Malamaal
Weekly and Chup Chup Ke
Raju Srivastav is an Indian comedian has appeared in more than 120 Hindi
language films and also in a popular Standup Comedian. His acting and dancing
skills gained him widespread attention among film viewers. He later gained
worldwide fame as a Bollywood icon for his comedy films like Shola Aur Shabnam,
Aankhen, Coolie No.1, Haseena Maan Jaayegi Partner and Bombay to goa.
