Dharma Productions have been producing many mega hits in Hindi film industry. For many years, their films have appealing a huge number of people because their films are perfectly rendered stories with reputed star cast. The success at box office for each of their movies is a sign that people from different parts of the world have loved their films.

Dharma Productions Pvt Ltd was established by Yash Johar in 1976. Ever since its inception the production house has been continuously producing blockbuster films. By producing Dostana(1980) with all time favorite hero Amitabh Bachchan, talented Shatrughan Sinha and the sensuous lady Zeenat Aman, they started their success saga. Roping in another set of popular stars, they produced Duniya in 1984 and this film also succeeded at the box office. All the components like drama, romance, emotional scenes and suspense was present in their films. They also produced films like Gumrah, Muqaddar Ka Faisla and Agneepath.

The high reputation of Dharma Productions reaching a new height was obvious and it gave way to a company home. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), the first film directed by Karan Johar (son of Yash Johar), was produced under this concern. This film was the first Hindi movie to be listed in Top 10 list in UK. This romantic film once more paired the Bollywood's most loved couple Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. The film not just became the megahit of the year but it also got many awards in the national and international arena for the production and the star cast. The film got the National Award for Wholesome Entertainment in the year from Government of India.


Dharma Productions went on from success to success as Karan Johar came up with new stories which were for young and family audience. He wanted to draw the public to theatres, for that he made sure his movies have drama and fun in all of them.

Although, his films were considered to be with exaggerated stories and emotions but he managed to entertain people. He not just roped in stars of 3 generation but also ensured the commercial success of the movie Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham. He got the returns for his efforts when the film became a success in India and abroad. The film became the highest grossing film in UK and US in the year 2001.

Karan Johar's movies Kal Ho Na Ho and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna were also widely accepted. The screenplay written for the movie Kal Ho Na Ho has been kept in the library of Motion Pictures for reference. Newest movies in Bollywood from Dharma Productions were Dostana, Wake up Sid - both with new generation actors and actresses- and Kurbaan and My Name Is Khan - with audience favorites like Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor.
