The Dark Knight came out in 2008 and was directed and partly written by Christopher Nolan. The film was inspired on the comics character Batman, the movie is part of Nolan's Batman movie series and a sequel to 2005's flick Batman Begins. The film follows Bruce Wayne/Batman, District Attorney Harvey Dent/Two-Face, and Police Commissioner James Gordon and their endeavor and journey in doing battle with the new soaring threat of a criminal who goes by the name of the Joker.

The premiere for The Dark Knight was in New York on July 14, 2008, screening in an IMAX theater. Leading up to The Dark Knight's release, the film had drawn large amounts of positive early reviews and buzz on Heath Ledger's turn as the Joker. The Dark Knight was a record setter on the opening day of July 18, 2008 with $18.5 million, topping the $16.9 million record set by Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in 2005 on their midnight showings.

Online, ticketing services sold enormous numbers of tickets for approximately 3,000 midnight show times as well as unusually early show times for the film's opening day. All IMAX theaters showing The Dark Knight were completely sold out for the opening weekend.

With the giant success of The Dark Knight, many fans are eagerly waiting for the next film.

While speaking at the Comic-Con panel for his new movie, Gary Oldman let slip to the crowd that the next Batman film will start shooting in 2010, with a release date of sometime in 2011. When Warner Bros. Oldman was the actor who played Commissioner Gordon in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

At one point you even had cast members talking about the characters planned for the third chapter in the new Batman story, going so far as to talk about actors being approached, Christopher Nolan did admitted that no work was made on that though.
The lack of real information hasn't kept the cast from talking, but keep in mind that it may just be talk. That disclaimer aside, Katey Rich got the chance to talk to one of my favorite Dark Knight actors, Michael Caine, though he admits that the next installment of The Batman series is further off than fans had hoped for.
Caine points the finger at Christopher Nolan for the delay in the release of a follow up to The Dark Knight, stating that not much can be done until the movie Inception is complete. Nolan kind of did the same thing after Batman Begins. Now he's taking time away from Batman to make Inception, which will likely put a third picture as far away as three years, according to Caine.
