When Hippocrates said let food be thy medicine, thy medicine shall be thy food, what he meant was that food could be a medicine and medicine could be avoided; and, the same is the central theme of Ayurveda. Factually, unlike Allopathic systems of medicine, Ayurveda treats not just the ailment but the whole person and emphasizes prevention of disease to avoid the need for cure. Ayurveda is a holistic healing science which in fact is knowledge or science of life. Consecrated in various chapters of Veda, health science has been dealt in detail. Leading benefit of using herbal medicines is to ensure physical and mental health without side effects.
Whereas, the chemicals used in preparing allopathic medicines have impact on mind, Ayurvedic medicines are safe and secure which do not have such effect. Moreover, Ayurvedic medicines inherently prevent as well as promote body's own capacity for maintenance and balance e.g. strengthens immune system. Additionally, herbal medicines do not contain toxic elements; therefore, they are non-invasive which could be used as alternative therapy.

Quoting Hippocrates again, he says that you should leave your drugs in the chemist's pot if you can heal the patient with food. Advocates of Ayurveda claim that it is not man made but divine gift to humanity helping curing bodily ailments. The fundamental principle of Ayurvedic treatment is that herbs such as plants, flowers, fruits, vegetables, etc. are used in manufacturing of medicines. Stress is given to make medicines able to contain their medicinal values intact.
Moreover, Ayurveda begins when everything fails, i.e. you ponder to Ayurvedic curing methods ultimately. Whereas, Allopathic medicines are better in curing certain diseases, certain other diseases are curable only by Ayurvedic medicines. Some diseases which have chronic and stubborn nature could be cured easily by deep-rooted treatment procedures and Ayurvedic medicines. Nonetheless, people who have been harassed by allopathic medicines are moving towards herbal medicines.
There are various Ayurvedic therapies such as Urine therapy, Rejuvenation (rasaayana) therapy, Fish therapy (for asthma), Ayurvedic Mental Therapy for Ailments, etc. which are used to curing various ailments. In order to have effective cure of the ailments you are checked for the disease and its various symptoms. It is important to diagnose a disease before starting the application of Ayurvedic treatment system.
Tests or checkups such as how, when where the ailment occurred, past history of similar illness, medicines taken, surgery undergone, marriage, sexual life, family, occupational history, diet, sleep, bowel movements, smoking, alcohol intake, living conditions, financial status, social life and mental status, etc. are done to ensure that the ailment is cured perfectly for all time. In nutshell, Ayurvedic medicines try to cure a disease from its root.
