Art Deception: reality or illusion?

16 October 2009 - 24 January 2010

From ancient Greco-Roman mosaics and frescoes to European masterpieces of the 1300s, from Flemish school to nowadays: 120 works tell the intriguing and spectacular history of trompe-l'oeil.
The museum begins with the mythical episode of Grapes of Zeusi to proceed with the sections ‘Still-Life?' and ‘Environmental Mirages', with glove-compartments and wall-cabinets. On display also the famous ‘Scarabattolo', or ‘cabinet of curiosities', from Opificio delle Pietre Dure.
There will be, as in the best tradition of illusion, a section reserved to mirrors-games with masterpieces by Mantegna, Tiziano and Veronese. Works by American artists such as Kaye, Harnett and Haberle will be on display in Europe for the very first time.
Moreover a special interactive room will take place where visitors can directly experience sensorial deceptions and illusions.
