Just about every school and business in the county has a guillotine cutter. These tools make it easy to cut 15 sheets of paper (or more) with one swing of the blade. There are many different guillotine cutters out there and some of the best ones are made by Dahle, a company based in Germany. Dahle offers three different types of guillotine cutters and this article will talk about those cutters and what they can do.

  • Vantage Trimmers. These are Dahle's entry-level trimmers. But don't let the term "entry-level" fool you because these trimmers are high-quality and are great for just about any project. Vantage trimmers come in three cutting lengths (12", 15", and 18"), can cut up to 15 sheets of paper at one, and are great for craft projects, work assignments, and cropping photographs. These cutters are lightweight so you can take them along with you, if necessary. Each trimmer has spring-loaded blade that stays in place, so you don't have to worry about the blade falling down and chopping off a finger or two. (The blade can also be secured when it's in the "down" position.) There is also a paper clamp so your papers will stay put as you cut. These trimmers are pretty affordable and cost anywhere from $79.00 to $109.00, depending on the size of trimmer you buy.

  • Professional Guillotine Cutters. Like the Vantage trimmers, Dahle's professional guillotine trimmers can cut up to 15 sheets of paper. There are four sizes of these cutters available, ranging from 12" to 24". The 24-inch model has a wooden base, but the others have metal bases, so they're pretty durable. Each cutter has a self-sharpening blade which is made from Solingen steel and the blade is sturdy so it will stay in place, even when it's raised. These cutters have a protective edge that both holds your paper in place and shields your fingers from the blade, so you won't get injured. These cutters vary in price: the 12-inch model goes for $139.00 and the largest cutter, the 24-inch one, retails for $349.00.

  • Premium Guillotine Cutters. These are the cream of crop when it comes to Dahle guillotine trimmers. Dahle premium guillotine trimmers are perfect for companies or organizations that need an accurate, heavy-duty cutter. Like the professional trimmers, the blades in the premium cutters are self-sharpening, so you'll never have to worry about your blade becoming dull. (The blade contains a spring so it won't come falling down and possibly injure you.) These blades can cut up to 35 sheets of paper and the base contains a preprinted guide to assist you in determining where to cut your paper. Premium cutters are available in four cutting lengths: 14.5", 15.5", 21.5", and 27.5". The 14.5" cutter is available as a basic model, but there's also one with a laser in it (model #564). The laser can help you out tremendously because it shows you where your cut will be before you lower the blade. The 564 is the trimmer to get if you really need accurate cuts, but just be aware that it's a pretty expensive product, retailing for $1,899.00. The non-laser trimmers are much more affordable and prices start at $399.00 for the smallest cutter.
