"Alone in the Dark" is a survival horror game that is developed by Infogrames. This game is generally considered superior to all the sequels, for having non-linear gameplay throughout, greater emphasis on story, survival and investigation.

In Alone in the Dark, the story unfolds the hidden truths and suspense behind the death of Jeremy Hartwood, a noted artist. The player assumes the role of either Edward Carnby, a private detective who is sent to find a piano in the loft for an antique dealer -- Emily, who is also interested in finding the piano because she believes a secret drawer in it has a note in which Jeremy explains his suicide.

Players have to investigate the case in the haunted house, where the doors mysteriously slam shut behind them. They should move to the attic, where the fight begins. The monsters will attack the players and after the combat moves and gunning acts, the players have to progress through the various rooms of the house, fighting off various creatures and other hazards in the house. At one stage, they have to take on group of zombies, booby-traps and arcane books, in order to solve the mystery. Only thing the players have to mind is about the various harmful powers possessed by the creatures of the house. Enhanced camera controls allows complete freedom of the camera and better handling of first person view camera movement paves way for even more immersive gameplay.

As the story moves in this combat fashion, the story is revealed to the player through an extensive series of books and notes found throughout the game and the players are responsible to bring out the mystery behind the death of Jeremy. Being a hot survivor game, "Alone in the Dark" is banging out the gamers' applause and greetings all around the world.
