Using an Internet Phone Service brings people several advanatages, the largest of which is that you are able to make cheap calls to India, or any other country in the world. It is because you are taking advantage of an existing data network - the Internet. VoIP is digitally based. The features and services that it offers could not be obtained with a traditional phone. It provides you with the option to make combination between phone calls and business data. It offers additional features such as software integration with your computer. The other advantage of Internet is that you are also provided with access to caller ID, voice mail, call conferencing and call forwarding.
The Internet phone has, however not only advantages, as there are some disadvantages to utilizing the service as well. The first one is that the Internet Phone is wholly dependant on power. With the landline phone you are able to use it even if there is no power, because it is provided by the central office. With the Internet phone, if your power goes out, your phone will not work for even a second. So if there is a power failure you will not be able to use your phone. The PSTN technology is based on a point to point connection. While the Internet Phone uses the web like and multilink network of Internet. It means that with traditional PSTN phone line you will be unable to call India. On the other hand, in case a link is down when using the Internet Phone service the call will be routed over. Internet provides many routing options to complete the call. For example, if there are natural or artificial disasters the Internet Phone Service would be the only one available and working service. In such cases neither PSTN lines, nor mobile cellular devices is reliable.

Previously, Internet Phone Service had some problems with voice delay. This caused the problem of echo. In the beginning of its development, IPS suffered the same problems as the home Internet connections, such as jitter, latency, and loss of packet. All these issues have lead to distortion or loss of phone conversations. During the last few years most of these problems are in the past. The reason for that are all the improvements to the Internet, broadband, VoIP protocols and codecs.
