Acrylic paint is very often substituted for oil based paints whenever someone is creating a canvas of modern art forms. Remember, acrylic paint is a very different substance. Nevertheless, it has become the preferred type of painting due to its versatility. Since it is water based, it is therefore more popular in comparison. However, it is water soluble only until it is dried. After that, it becomes completely impervious to water.
These two kinds of paint are each made up of several different types of ingredients. Therefore, the oil based paint is shiny, unforgiving and requires a long period of time to dry completely. Acrylic paint, on the other hand is not shiny, can be removed with only water while it is still wet and has the ability to dry almost instantly. These water based paints can be used on many different types of textures; ranging from cement, wood, plaster or on a general canvas. Due to its easy dry capacity, acrylic paint is sometimes used on fabrics.
Unfortunately, the use of turpentine is needed to remove any oil based products that have touched your hands. On the other hand, acrylic paints can be cleaned up with soap and water. Therefore, it reduces the chances that anyone would have an allergic reaction to the fumes and persistent odors that are associated with oil. There is a major disadvantage when painting with this medium. Combining a variety of colors can become very challenging; simply because it dries so fast.

So, if you should decide to experiment with this type of paint, be sure that you have planned your project very carefully; especially if you are painting a portrait.
