MAKING A TEXT BOOK INVESTMENT

Perspective on Investing in the Poor Population of Bangladesh & Building a Social Business in California

Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus has donated his life to millions of poor Bangladeshis and with the power of positive thought he has succeeded in fulfilling humanity needs. Yunus has created a business that practices lending to those who are starving, uneducated, begging and have given them the opportunity to become entrepreneurs in their own developing nation. A true leader for his people, Yunus has created a new business model for investing and lending which is not only successful, but has helped millions escape poverty. Now, he has decided that some California students might be able to benefit from his business model. Your kidding right, why would a 20 year old American be concerned about the teachings of a Bangladeshi banker who has devoted his entire life to increasing the quality of life for his neighbors.

Yunus is planning to visit one of the CSU's in California. California State Channel Islands, and according to sociology professors there, CSUCI is about to un vail a Social Entrepreneurship Institute, the first of its breed in California. What is the purpose of the institute and this type research, one might ask? Well, here is an example, and one that few talk about. I suspect that, it is not enough for policy makers in Washington or the owners of the largest corporations in the world who operate in the U.S. for its cultural, democratic and public image; its not enough for them that the prison population, in the United States, has tripled in the last 20 years. In addition, we are seeing the worst - financial crises since the Great Depression; further more, close to 50 million people are in poverty in the United States. Of course, the U.S. recession is insignificant when compared to the quality of life that middle class citizens conduct their business in developing countries.

The United States has had its share of social momentum makers and reformists, however today the word on buzz is social entrepreneur and social business. Where do words like this come from? The professors at CSUCI and Yunus differ slightly in their definitions of social business, however, agree on one point, there is something missing from business for profit. As a student at CSUCI, I suggest that it could be humanity it self. Yunus, in his book, Creating a World Without Poverty; Social business and the Future of Capitalism offered a new way of looking at the way traditional banks loan money to their borrowers. Further more, Yunus has been extraordinarily successful in using his business plan, and I am sure that how he did it should be spoken about as magnanimous; however, in spite of a capitalist economy it is even more remarkable that being magnanimous is why it worked. Banks are always making the decision on who is loan trust worthy, Yunus decided that the banks should be critiqued on whether they are people worthy.

With the economy, as it is today, in the United States the material environment where Americans do business is changing. I have become immune to the everyday existence of poverty and suffering right out of my car window. Now, these sights are starting to drill right down to the core of my being. Social responsibility is something that public schools can not be able to discard so easily now days. From the declining moral standards that have plagued the United States in last twenty years, to the declining economy, there seems to be a trend. This trend will eventually lead to the social entrepreneurship teachings of such people as Yunus and others like Bill Drayton, Yale Jurist Doctorate recipient and named one of Americas top Leaders in 2005, CEO of Ashoka. I have begun, my own, social entrepreneurship and wish to compare it to those I have mentioned previously. personally, I have no other choice but to face a changing economy, further more, I am prone to listen to a an economy leader who will ultimately lead to those teachings that create new business.

To put things is perspective, there is a grass roots organization that I would like to introduce. Aikido Kenkyukai Santa Barbara is a non profit that has taken a huge step into Southern California's alternative education system. An institution would be hard pressed to be able to replace the public school system; however, AKSB is making a bench mark by sponsoring at risk youth to practice Aikido and offering an alternative to main stream philosophy. To most, this may sound like just another attempted to keep attention deficit youth occupied or entrapped. In essence, yes that is the goal; however, in training, producing utilitarian philosophy and making it available to those who have seen little but capitalists agendas, may help some see the bright side instead of a capitalistic wall that there is no way around. Quite frankly, aggressive capitalism is intimidating to child, it was intimidating to me, and to think that I must make a living someday, at fourteen, its overwhelming.

The moral to this article is, why not try to provide an availability to produce open communication without strategic capitalistic values. Allow new relationships to grow, allow a new confidence that is blossoming in a changing California economy. You might be curious to know how does Aikido transmit its message? Through a simple process of interpersonal relationship tanning, tempered and discipline focused on observing your surroundings and acting in ways to blend in and promote the cause at hand. There are a few base sites that would help to promote the business practice as described in this article, one is my web site which has a link news letter at the bottom right of the page. The news letter will keep other social entrepreneurs informed about AKSB and CSUCI relations along with other new developments at local colleges like the Santa Barbara City College Aikido Club.
