The business world is often dominated by men and this has long been the case, recently this issue has raised debates in parliament about what could be done to promote more women into UK boardrooms.

Women have made big strides in business over the last few decades and there are a growing number of successful women in the business world, one of those successful women, is Nails Inc founder Thea Green. She is the head of a successful beauty business, and was awarded the 'Entrepreneurial Woman of the Future' in November 2010 and she was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in June 2011 for her services for the beauty industry.

Her story of one of entrepreneurial success, during her time as fashion editor with Tatler magazine she would travel to the US and found she could get her nails done in a quicker time and much cheaper than she could in the UK, there was not anything similar available in the UK. In 1999 she decided to launch a chain of nail bars in the UK that provided affordable luxury, getting a manicure in the UK before 1999 a lengthy process, her Nails Inc salon changed all that.

After leaving her job as fashion editor with Tatler magazine in 1999, she went on to raise £200,000 from investors and along with her business partner, they opened the first affordable luxury UK nail store in South Molton Street, London. There was not anything similar available in the UK prior to her store, which offered quality manicures in a few minutes.

The feedback was positive with her salon full of customers, Nails Inc was born. A couple of months after opening the first store, the founders opened four others and a concession in the House of Fraser and Debenhams. Nails Inc has since grown to over incorporate 60 outlets nationwide, a successful online store (that also sells nail based beauty products including Nails Inc branded nail polish) that is socially savvy (Twitter Followers: 3,493, Facebook Likes: 8,927) and a healthy turnover.

Thea Green joins a growing list of female leaders in the beauty and fashion world (such as Anita Roddick, Emma Harrison, Annabel Karmel and Dame Perkins). According to a 2010 report by Cranfield School of Management the number of female executive directors is increasing, with only 2% of executive directors on FTSE 100 company boards being female in 1999, whilst in 2010 5.5% of executive directors on FTSE 100 boards were women. Other reports suggest that female participation is approaching 30% at senior levels within companies, whilst the number of women in the workplace within the UK is amongst the highest in the world, progress is being made.
