There has been quite a bit of hysteria regarding 2012 predictions and prophecies. It's not surprising that so many people are researching to find their own versions of fact and fiction surrounding this contentious subject. Millions of pages in print and on the Internet discuss different 2012 predictions. A person could devote a lifetime trying to make sense out of all the forums devoted to the 2012 question. The more you hear, the more confusing it can be.

Depending on who you ask, there are many things that may actually happen at this time. However, some people claim that nothing was ever stated in Mayan history about doomsday or anything else in 2012. This almost reminds you of all the worries that went on at the beginning of 2000, and the Y2K computer problem.

The Mayan calendar ends on what they called the end of the Great Cycle, which has been translated to mean that the world will end. This is due in part to the fact that many scholars believe the Mayans to be adept at astronomy and mathematics, and that they were knowledgeable in interpreting what the heavens were revealing to them at that time.

But is this all true, does the Mayan calendar really point to destruction? There are many who believe that those who point to the 2012 end of the world are really misreading what the ending of the Great Cycle means. They see the Great Cycle as a time of celebration and happiness for the Mayans. This is because the Mayans believe that making it to the ending of the great cycle as a great accomplishment worthy of celebration.

It is interesting that those people who make up present day Mayan society really hold nothing in significance to the year 2012. They don't really use the long count calendar anymore either. Perhaps it was something that was even created or thought up by someone who discovered part of the Mayan past.

No matter how you view it, in the long run you need to think about this. Remember what happened at the end of 1999 when everyone thought computers would stop working. Did they?
