Premium Movie Channels How many are enough

By: frankbilotta | Posted: 05th May 2010

I'll start out by admitting that, when it comes to TV home entertainment packages from my programming provider, I don't know how to say "Stop." The Basic Package is still not good enough for me. Simple upgrade … more channels - still doesn't satisfy me. I want and need more.

Yes, I'm one of those subscribers to at-home programming that has to get "the best of the best," The Gold package, if that is what it is actually called. That means I get access to more networks than I actually want or could ever watch … more shopping channels that I never watch … more foreign language channels that I can't watch (because I don't understand the language) … and more premium channels.

It is the Premium Channels that made me "go for the gold" in the first place. So now, when I turn on my TV, I have several stations playing feature length films - without commercial interruption - for The Movie Channel … for HBO (Home Box Office) … for Showtime … for the Starz Network … you get the idea.

There are probably thirty to forty "movie channels" included in my package, all of which present programming 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week. I like having that access, but the truth is that I can't watch more than one movie at a time and, moreover, I don't watch films nearly enough to justify the extra monthly expense that shows up on my invoice from my programming provider.

I suppose I'm like "a kid in a candy store," in that if I see it, I want it. And now, I've got it - an actual embarrassment of riches - far more channels than I am capable of watching … too many channels about which I care little or not at all … and yet, I can't give them up.

I enjoy knowing that, when I channel-surf, I can go on and on and on until I find something that appeals to me. Of course, I also know that what appeals to me can be found in a handful of channels that I watch most of the time.

No matter. I live in the 21st Century and I want to take advantage of it. That means I want to retain access to every network and every channel in existence. It doesn't really matter that I only watch the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) network for the old movies that I really like.

I'm a modern TV viewer and, like almost everybody else, I want it all.
