Sightseeing in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is famed for its liberal attitudes to drugs and sex, but there's so very much more to this city than the seedy aspect of life.
It's a city built around canals, and these can offer a very unique way to view some of Amsterdam's landmarks, while also being taught a bit about the heritage of the town.
There are a lot of museums in Amsterdam, and these range between Dutch heritage, to diamonds to art museums. There is something for almost everyone, and if you cannot find what you're looking for there is always something new to learn.
Amsterdam has a wide and varied choice of architecture to explore, with around 7000 registered consequential buildings. There are religious places like churches and Synagogues, and modern buildings that have added a new dimension to the town's skyline.
There's a large retail area close to the main station that has traditional as well as modern stores, and there are still many street markets that happen daily or on certain days each week that sell everything from fresh veggies to books and bric-a-brak.
When choosing where to go to eat, there's a huge range, and some of the finest Asian cafes can be discovered here thanks to the Dutch explorers links to the opposite side of the world. There are also many local bars and cafeterias which offer cost-effective meals and of course good lager.
